Hand Therapy

The hand is a very intricate structure.  It gives us the ability to grip and lift heavy objects, perform the intricate motions required to tie our shoes or play the piano and provides one of the most important resources we as humans have, our sense of touch.  It is a system that must stay in balance to function properly.

The importance and complexity of the hand is a key reason that some physicians and physical and occupational therapists specialize exclusively in the treatment of hand injuries.

Our certified hand therapists will work with you after a hand injury or condition such as carpal tunnel to restore your normal joint range of motion and strength.  This focused therapy will allow you to return to your occupation or hobbies as quickly and as safely as possible.

Our certified hand therapists provide therapy including joint mobilization, scar and edema management and exercise for patients with orthopedic and neurologic conditions including arthritis, tendonitis, nerve injuries and chronic pain. Fabrication of custom arm, hand and leg splints for restoration of function, elimination of pain and protection of inflamed or injured structures is also available.

We will provide you treatment for the following conditions:

  • Tendonitis
  • Tendon Lacerations
  • Epicondylitis (Tennis/Golfer's Elbow)
  • Rotator Cuff Injuries
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Nerve Compressions
  • Nerve Lacerations
  • Adhesive Capsulitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Scleroderma
  • Fractures of the Fingers, Wrist and Arm
  • Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome)

Ergonomic Assessment and Training

Physical and Occupational Therapists have a fundamental knowledge of the human body and the requirements placed on the body to perform work-related tasks.  Our knowledge of the human body and our thorough understanding of the processes of injury and cumulative trauma allow us to provide ergonomic assessment of job situations and equipment to identify dangerous stresses to soft tissue and joints.  Our recommendations are focused at changing work habits, increasing strength in weak muscles and improving stamina and endurance so that overall tolerance to work is improved and further injury can be prevented.

On-site Job/Ergonomic Assessment

As part of the total picture, we provide on-site job assessments to make recommendations for task modification and ergonomic equipment to reduce the stress put on your body while you are at your job.  We will also take the opportunity to teach you stretches that can be performed at work to improve blood flow and decrease stress on tired, over-worked muscles and joints.  If an on-site job assessment is not possible, we can work with you  in our clinic to provide as much direction as needed for when you return to your place of work.
